Read and Burn

Send a self-destructing encrypted message: it's deleted after being read once, or automatically after 30 days.

Your message is encrypted before it's stored. The decryption password lives only in the link below -- we never keep a copy of it.

Read and Burn lets you send a message that self-destructs after it's read, or automatically after 30 days if it's never opened -- whichever comes first. Nothing is stored in plain text: your message is encrypted the moment you submit it, and the password needed to decrypt it exists only in the link you share, never on our servers.

How it works

When you write a message, we encrypt it and hand you back a single secret link. The decryption key exists only inside that link -- we never store it anywhere on our end, so we have no way to read your message ourselves. Opening the link shows a warning before anything is revealed, since revealing it immediately and permanently deletes the message. If nobody ever opens the link, it's automatically deleted after 30 days. We also automatically block repeated guessing at a link from the same address.

Worked example

Say you want to share a temporary password with a colleague. Type it into the box above and click "Create Secret Link" -- you'll get a link like https://readandburn.tolvido.com/msg/4k9p2xqz7h3wdmnc82fa9. Send that link over chat or email. The moment your colleague clicks it and confirms they want to reveal it, the message is shown once and permanently deleted -- if they (or anyone else) try the same link again, it will say the message no longer exists.

Frequently asked questions

Can you read my message?

No. Your message is encrypted before it's stored, and the password needed to decrypt it is embedded only in the link we give you -- we never store that password anywhere, so we have no way to decrypt your message ourselves.

What happens if I open the link twice?

The message is deleted the instant it's revealed, so opening the same link again will show that the message no longer exists. If you need to keep a copy, save it somewhere else after reading it.

What if nobody ever opens the link?

Unopened messages are automatically and permanently deleted 30 days after creation.

Is there a message length limit?

Yes, messages are limited to 10,000 characters -- long enough for a password, a note, or a paragraph, not for large documents.
