Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage and say how many people are paying: the calculator shows the tip, the total and what each person owes, updating as you type. Use the 10, 15, 18, 20 and 25% buttons or type any custom percentage. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere.
How it works
The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage: tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100. The total is the bill plus the tip, and the amount per person is the total divided by the number of people. Results are shown to two decimals, so when a split doesn't divide evenly someone may need to round up by a cent. In the United States, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is the usual tip for table service in restaurants, with 18–20% now common in cities and for good service; many people tip less, or nothing, at counters and coffee shops. Check the receipt first: some restaurants add an automatic gratuity or service charge for larger groups, and you shouldn't tip twice. Customs differ abroad: in much of Europe service is included and a few percent or rounding up is normal.
Worked example
A $50 bill split three ways with an 18% tip: the tip is $50 × 0.18 = $9, the total is $59, and each person owes $59 ÷ 3 = $19.67. With 20% instead, the tip is $10, the total $60 and everyone pays exactly $20.
